What to Pack for Your First Wrestling Tournament

What to Pack for Your First Wrestling Tournament

Your kid's first wrestling tournament is exciting and a little overwhelming. You show up, see hundreds of families with coolers and chairs and bags, and wonder what you forgot. Here's the packing list that will make you look like you've done this for years.

The Essentials

  • Wrestling shoes and headgear. Pack a backup if you have one. Laces break at the worst times.
  • Singlet and warm-ups. Bring the singlet in a separate bag so it stays clean.
  • Healthy snacks and water. Tournaments run long. Pack protein bars, fruit, and plenty of water. Avoid the concession stand sugar crash.
  • Entertainment. There is a lot of waiting between matches. Bring a book, cards, or a tablet.

For the Parents

  • Folding chairs. Bleachers get uncomfortable fast. If it's an outdoor event, bring a canopy too.
  • Cooler. You'll be there for hours. Keep drinks and snacks cold. See our recommended coolers here.
  • Portable charger. Your phone will die from recording matches and checking brackets. These chargers are the ones we recommend.
  • Blanket or stadium seat. Gym floors are hard and cold. Your back will thank you.

Stay Organized All Season

The real secret to surviving wrestling season isn't just packing right for one tournament. It's keeping track of the whole season: practice schedules, tournament dates, weight management, and contact info for coaches.

That's why we made the Youth Wrestling Parent Command Center. It's a printable organizer with tournament prep checklists, practice trackers, and season planning pages. Print what you need, skip what you don't.
