Youth Baseball Season Prep: A Parent's Guide
Baseball season sneaks up fast. One day it's winter, the next day you're getting emails about evaluations and uniform fittings. Here's how to get ready without the last minute scramble.
Gear Check
- Glove. Make sure it still fits. Kids grow fast and a glove that's too small will frustrate them.
- Cleats. Check the size before the first practice. Break them in with a few backyard sessions.
- Bat. Check your league's bat regulations. They change and an illegal bat means a wasted purchase.
- Helmet and bag. Label everything with your kid's name. The lost and found at every field is overflowing.
Schedule Management
Between practices, games, and tournaments, baseball can take over your calendar from March through July. The families who enjoy the season most are the ones who get organized early.
Write down every important date the day you get the schedule. Practices, games, picture day, opening ceremonies, tournament weekends. Put them all in one place where the whole family can see them.
For Tournament Weekends
Travel ball tournaments mean long days at the field. Pack like you're going camping:
- Canopy or shade tent for between games
- Cooler with drinks and real food (not just concession stand snacks)
- Folding chairs and a wagon to haul everything
- Sunscreen, bug spray, and a first aid kit
- Portable charger for your phone
Our recommended gear page has the specific coolers, chairs, and chargers we suggest for baseball families.
